Course Description

Emotionally Focused Therapy, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, has cracked the code on romantic love. This humanistic approach to psychotherapy is based on the science of adult attachment and is one of the most widely researched and effective therapies available. This training offers a conceptual framework of the key features of EFT, including adult attachment and the role of emotion in organizing interactions and emotion as a target and agent of change. The clinical application of these concepts and key EFT interventions across the arc of treatment will be examined. This training brings Emotionally Focused Therapy alive through discussion, observation of real unscripted therapy sessions, and engaging exercises. Practical tools and interventions to help the therapist de-escalate even the most distressed couples will be discussed. Participants will learn clinical skills on how to assemble the components of emotion and organize couples' distress within an attachment-informed systemic frame, develop skills in helping partners reprocess the emotional responses that maintain relational distress, and develop skills in helping partners shape new interaction patterns and bonding events. Though EFT is primarily known as a cutting-edge therapy for couples, it is also used to help individuals address depression, anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress, as well as help distressed families. Key change techniques for EFT with individuals will be outlined.
