Course Description

This workshop introduces the most current best practices, research, and guidelines for multicultural clinical supervision and telesupervision within the frame of cultural humility. Participants will learn the complexity of the multiple components of supervisor competence and worldviews in clinical supervision. There will be an emphasis on strategies to enhance supervision, including multicultural identities and worldviews in the context of establishing the supervisory relationship. In addition, there will be a review of ways to prevent incidents of inappropriate and inadequate supervision, which research has identified is occurring at high rates. There will be a discussion as to why the supervision contract is essential to ensure excellent practice, as is goal and task setting, ongoing anchored feedback, ongoing attention to relationship and outcomes, the impact of trauma and trauma-informed supervision, and the management of countertransference and emotional reactivity These are all essential to enhance supervisor competence in self-awareness and support self-sustainability. There will be a discussion of proactive approaches to address ethical practice and legal risk.

This class meets the cultural diversity course requirement for California psychologists.

Carol Falender Ph.D.

is co-author of Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (2nd ed.) (2021), Consultation in Psychology: A Competency-based approach (2020), Essentials of the Practice of Competency-based Clinical Supervision (2016); Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (APA, 2004); and Getting the Most Out of Clinical Supervision: A Guide for Interns and Trainees (APA, 2012), all with Edward Shafranske; co-editor of Casebook for Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (APA, 2008) with Edward Shafranske, and Multiculturalism and Diversity in Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (2014) with Edward Shafranske and Celia Falicov. Dr. Falender was a member of the Supervision Guidelines Group of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) and Chair of the Supervision Guidelines Task Force of the Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) of APA. She directed APA approved internship programs at child and family guidance clinics for over twenty years. Dr. Falender is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) and was President of Division 37, Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice (APA). She is an Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University, Clinical Professor in the UCLA Department of Psychology, and Chair of the California Psychological Association Continuing Education Committee. She received the 2018 Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology Award from APA.

 

About This Webinar

The webinar is a live, interactive class. You will view the webinar in real time from your home or office on a computer, tablet (e.g., iPad) or phone. You will be able see the speaker and the slides, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and respond to polls. You will have access to the handouts, which you can view on your computer or download and print.

You will need to show up on time to receive credit, just like at an in-person class, but you can wear whatever you’d like! The class will run from 9am to 4pm Pacific Time. There will be a morning and afternoon break and a break for lunch. At the end of the class you will need to take a post-test and receive a score of 75% or above to pass. You have up to three attempts to pass the post-test. Most people pass on their first attempt. After two attempts to pass the post-test you will need to contact our office and you will be provided with one more attempt to pass the post-test. The post-test will only be available at the end of the class. Once you pass the post-test, you will complete an evaluation online and then you will receive your Certificate of Attendance online, which you can view and print.

Registration Information

The course fee is determined by the date of payment in relation to the course date:

  • Early Registration: If payment is received 3 weeks prior to the webinar date.
  • Regular Registration: For payments received less than 3 weeks prior to the webinar date.

Cancellation Policy

There is a $35.00 processing fee, per seminar, for refunds requested by the Wednesday prior to the weekend of the webinar. After that time, there will be no refunds. If a course must be cancelled due to an unforeseen event (e.g., natural disaster, instructor illness), the webinar will be rescheduled. Participants will be credited to take the rescheduled course or another PPS webinar. No refunds will be given.
