Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology
Course Description
This course is designed for licensed therapists who have a good deal of clinical experience. The workshop addresses the following. 1) up-date on new developments in the neurosciences that relate to understanding psychiatric disorders, 2) specifics on medical treatment of childhood psychiatric disorders, and 3) how to more effectively interact and collaborate with primary care pediatricians and psychiatrists in the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
Objective
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: (1)Develop refined skills related to diagnosing psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents; (2) Know which disorders and target symptoms are considered to be medication responsive; (3) Improve abilities to collaborate with psychiatrists and primary care pediatricians, and effectively discuss medication issues with parents (4) Evaluate the limitations and outcomes of pharmacologic treatments.

John Preston, Psy.D., ABPP is a Professor of Psychology with Alliant International University. He has also been on the faculty of UC Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Preston is the author of fourteen books including The Handbook of Psychopharmacology for Therapists, You Can Beat Depression and Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Preston is a highly gifted teacher, who has lectured widely in the United States and abroad. He consistently receives outstanding eval-uations from professionals attending his classes.
