Advanced Therapeutic Strategies with Eating Disorder Patients
Course Description
Patients with eating disorders can be extremely challenging cases, even for the most experienced therapists. This class is designed to increase the skill level of therapists working with these patients and their often complicated families. New diagnostic categories of Binge Eating Disorder, Night Eating Syndrome, and Diabulimia will be reviewed, as well as Bulimia and Anorexia. Eating Disorders are unique in that malnutrition affects the brain, body, psyche, and spirit, and consequently requires collaboration with a team of medical and nutritional specialists. Strategies for working with both individuals and families will be explored, as well as guidelines for when to refer to a higher level of care.
Objective
Participant will: (1) Learn how to identify and treat new diagnostic categories of eating disorders (2) Increase their knowledge of standard medications and medical treatment for eating disorder patients (3) Recognize when to refer to a higher level of care and resume working with these patients upon their discharge
