Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive review of assessment and treatment methods for ADHD, and summarizes the research literature on the effectiveness of different treatment approaches. Information is provided on how to assess ADHD from infancy through adulthood, along with the different assessment techniques that can be used to diagnose ADHD and differentiate ADHD from other psychological disorders. The use of stimulant drugs to treat ADHD receives considerable attention, along with other forms of drug treatment. Cognitive and behavioral treatment approaches for ADHD are reviewed as well. Resources for professionals are cited, as well as resources for parents, teachers and ADHD children.
Objective
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to identify: (1) typical characteristics of those with ADHD infancy through adulthood; (2) prevalence and prognosis for adults and children with ADHD; (3) appropriate assessment techniques to diagnose ADHD; (4) how ADHD differs from other co-morbid disorders; (5) what stimulant drugs are and how they are used to treat ADHD; (6) target behaviors most effected by stimulant drugs; (7) common side effects and response strategies for stimulant drugs; (8) the most efficacious psychological treatment(s); (9) behavioral management principles for use with parents, teachers, and children; (10) multimodal therapy; and (11) effectiveness of behavior therapy vs. medication for treatment
