Course Description

This class is designed to challenge even seasoned professionals, by using humorous film clips and current events to present complex ethical and legal dilemmas. Participants will be involved in determining how to deal with issues such as suicidal and homicidal patients, patient termination, self-disclosure, stalking, and the Patriot Act. Literature updates (including Tarasoff) and current opinion on the standard of care is presented as they pertain to these situations. This course satisfies the Law and Ethics course requirement for psychologists, MFTs, and LCSWs, which is required each license renewal cycle.

Objective

Participant will: (1) Identify difficult therapist dilemmas and apply appropriate ethical and legal principles; (2) Gain confidence handling difficult patient dilemmas in real life settings; and (3) Assess and critique therapist behavior in film clips while preparing for real-life patient situations

Pamela Harmell, Ph.D. is a former President of the California Board of Psychology and a former Chair of the CPA State Ethics Committee. She has written extensively in professional publications on ethical and legal issues, and teaches courses in professional ethics and law at Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology.
