Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive review of diagnostic criteria for BPD, assessment issues and instruments, and treatment approaches. The course reviews the prevalence rate for BPD and the likelihood of recovery from BPD. Diagnostic criteria and issues are presented, as well as information on how to differentiate BPD from other psychiatric disorders. Clinical assessment tools discussed include the clinical interview, self-report/interview instruments, suicide and self-harm instruments, and other psychometric assessment measures. General and specific treatment strategies are presented, along with a review of treatment approaches ranging from psycho-analytic to cognitive to dialectical behavior therapy. Genetic, biological and neurological influences are reviewed, and pharmacological treatments are presented and compared.

Objective

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to identify: (1) typical characteristics and subgroups of BPD; (2) prevalence and prognosis of BPD; (3) appropriate assessment techniques to diagnose BPD; (4) how BPD differs from other psychiatric disorders; (5) how to recognize and respond to the suicide potential for those with BPD; (6) rationale and treatment strategies for seven major treatment approaches; (7) common components of the various individual psychotherapies; (8) most efficacious psychological treatment(s); (9) medications that are used to treat BPD; and (10) effectiveness of behavior therapy vs. medication for treatment.
