Advances in the Treatment of Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Disorders
Course Description
High co-morbidity rates guarantee that current or past substance abuse will be an issue that clinicians will have to address in many patients they treat. In recent years there have been paradigm shifts with the viewing of addiction as both a chronic disease and brain disease, and with recognizing that engagement is a distinct and critical part of the treatment process. Methamphetamine has become the world's number one hard drug of abuse, and club drugs, pain medications, and college binge drinking have been major problems. New pharmacological (e.g., buprenorphine) and behavioral (e.g., motivational interviewing; contingency management) treatment strategies have been developed, and the ASAM patient placement criteria has become the national standard for conceptualizing cases and determining level of care. Participants will learn how to use this information to improve their skills in clinical practice.
Objective
Participant will: (1) Learn how to engage patients often ambivalent toward treatment (2) Obtain new information about current drugs of abuse (3) Learn current treatment models and strategies
