Course Description

Significant new developments, as well as controversies have taken place in psychoharmacology during the past two years. This workshop addresses: (1) potential problems with suicidality in children and teenagers treated with antidepressants; (2) childhood onset bipolar disorder (differential diagnosis and treatment); (3) new diagnostic criteria for bipolar spectrum disorders; (4) new bipolar medications; (5) empirically-derived treatment guidelines for ADHD and for major depression; (6) new studies on over-the-counter products (e.g., SAM-e); and (7) the role of psychotropic drugs in protecting and healing the brain (neuro-protection).

Objective

Participant will: (1) Develop better skills related to diagnosing psychiatric disorders (2) Become familiar with new approaches to the medication treatments of certain disorders (3) Appreciate limitations of pharmacologic treatments and the need for integrated approaches.

John Preston, Psy.D., ABPP

John Preston, Psy.D., ABPP is a Professor of Psychology with Alliant International University. He has also been on the faculty of UC Davis School of Medicine.
