Course Description

This seven (7) hour course can be used to fulfill a portion of the education/training/coursework component of the CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program. Or, the course can stand on its own, providing a useful resource for anyone who provides clinical supervision. Part III, when combined with Parts I and II, will fulfill the education/training/coursework requirements for the CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program. Part III will focus on the following topics: Legal and Ethical Issues in Supervision; Supervisor/Supervisee Boundaries; Legal and Ethical Issues in Psychotherapy. This workshop is designed to assist the supervisor in following ethical standards and legal requirements when providing supervision. It will provide valuable information to avoid legal liability both when providing supervision and in general practice. This course meets the California Board of Psychology and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences on-going requirement for continuing education in Law and Ethics, as well as in Supervision, each license renewal cycle.

Objective

Upon completion of this course, the participant will: 1. know and understand the relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards that relate to supervision, supervisors, and supervisees for the three mental health disciplines and be accurate at least 75 percent of the time. 2. know and understand the difference in the laws and regulations that govern the practices of marriage and family therapy, clinical social work, and psychotherapy and be accurate at least 75 percent of the time. 3. be prepared to appropriately guide supervisees with regard to issues such as, but not limited to: required disclosures, reimbursement, recordkeeping, dual relationships, confidentiality, privilege, responding to subpoenas, scope of license and practice, and advertising at least 75 percent of the time. 4. know where to get the answers to supervision-related questions with regard to relevant laws, regulations, and ethics in all cases where they are unsure of the answers. 5. accurately know and answer legal and ethical questions that arise when supervising supervisees at least 75 percent of the time.
