Depression in Adults: The Latest Assessment and Treatment Strategies
Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive review of assessment and treatment methods for depression, and summarizes the research literature on the effectiveness of different treatment approaches. Information is provided on how to assess depression using a variety of methods and instruments, and how to differentiate depression from other psychological disorders. The course reviews treatment using behavioral, cognitive, psychodynamic, and interpersonal therapy approaches. There is a chapter devoted to biological treatments for depression, including an excellent chart on medications, common side-effects, and special concerns. The appendix includes a review of common depression assessment tools and nearly 150 references.
Objective
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to identify: (1) the different characteristics of the various forms of depression; (2) the major tools for assessment of depression; (3) general treatment guidelines for depression; (4) the different methods for treating depression and their relative effectiveness; (5) the role of biology in depression; (6) anti-depressant medications used to treat depression; and (7) the effectiveness of using medications versus psychotherapy to treat depression.
