Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive review of diagnostic criteria for PTSD, assessment issues and instruments, and treatment approaches. The course material helps clinicians understand issues involved in choosing a specific treatment approach, based on the individual case, and addresses personal issues affecting clinicians when working with patients with this disorder. Neurobiological characteristics of those affected by PTSD are reviewed. Psychological treatment approaches are presented, along with the research findings to evaluate the effectiveness of these different approaches. The use of various classes of medications to treat PTSD is presented, as is their effectiveness in treatment. A variety of diagnostic tools and scales and reviewed, and an extensive bibliography of nearly 200 references is included.
Objective
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to identify: (1) typical characteristics of those with PTSD; (2) prevalence, prognosis, and risk factors for PTSD; (3) appropriate assessment techniques to diagnose PTSD; (4) how PTSD differs from other comorbid disorders; (5) medical conditions that have symptoms similar to PTSD; (6) global treatment issues related to PTSD; (7) the most efficacious psychological treatment(s); (8) the psychobiology of PTSD including the human stress response and brain alterations; (9) medical treatments used for PTSD; and (10) effectiveness of behavior therapy vs. medication for treatment.
