Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive review of assessment and treatment methods for OCD, and summarizes the research literature on the effectiveness of different treatment approaches. Information is provided on how to assess OCD using a variety of methods and instruments, and how to differentiate OCD from other psychological disorders. The course reviews treatment using behavioral, cognitive, psychoanalytic, group therapy, and family therapy approaches. The section on medical treatments for OCD covers neuroanatomy and biochemical factors in OCD, as well as the use of medications and their effectiveness in treating OCD. Resources for professionals--including books, articles and therapy manuals—are cited, as well as resources for OCD patients and their families.

Objective

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to identify: (1) typical characteristics of those with OCD; (2) prevalence and prognosis for those with OCD; (3) definitions of obsessions and compulsions; (4) appropriate assessment strategies; (5) how OCD differs from other co-morbid disorders; (6) the treatment rationale and approach of the major treatment modalities; (7) the most efficacious psychological treatment(s); (8) the biological underpinnings for OCD; (9) rationale and mechanism of action for medication treatment; and (10) effectiveness of behavior therapy vs. medication for treatment
