Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Course Description
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is becoming the standard of care in working with Borderline Personality Disordered patients, as well as those other difficult to treat/manage clinical cases of emotional instability. Utilization of DBT in clinical practice has been empirically validated to reduce crises, lower hospitalizations, and improve daily functioning of patients. This course provides an overview of DBT and its clinical application in the treatment of not only Borderline pathologies, but other difficult to treat clinical cases as well. All four skill development modules are addressed in a modified format that helps adapt DBT to private practice or managed care setting for shorter term treatment.
Objective
Upon completion of this course, the participant will: (1) Acquire a fundamental understanding for DBT skills which can be used to help enhance psychotherapy, as well as aid in clarifying treatment goals. (2) Learn how to adapt principles of DBT into individual psychotherapy; (3) Learn the proper use and construction of daily diary cards; (4) Learn clinical skills which can be effective in minimizing crisis seeking behavior, and increasing the patients ability to care for themselves; (5) Develop a greater understanding of how dialectical thinking and acceptance of the patients’ symptoms can aid in the development of therapeutic alliance and compliance with treatment.
