Bipolar Spectrum Disorders
Course Description
Bipolar spectrum disorders are very serious and chronic mood disorders, having the highest rates of suicide and substance abuse of any psychiatric illness. This course examines new criteria for diagnosis, including the distinctions between symptom patterns for children, adolescents, and adults. There is discussion of the neurobiology and pathophysiology of bipolar disorder, as well as current pharmacologic treatment strategies. Finally, the video covers important strategies for lifestyle management and adjunctive non-pharmacologic treatment approaches (psycho-therapy, exercise, etc.) to prevent or minimize the likelihood of recurrent episodes of mania and depression
Objective
Upon completion of this course, the participant will: (1) Develop enhanced diagnostic skills (2) Understand new diagnostic criteria for children and adults; (3) Pinpoint specific issues that may account for poor response to treatment; (4) Address the role of non-pharmacologic approaches as adjuncts to medical treatment; (5) Better understand standard and alternative pharmacologic strategies; (6) Develop realistic goals for treating tough cases.

John Preston, Psy.D., ABPP is a Professor of Psychology with Alliant International University. He has also been on the faculty of UC Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Preston is the author of fourteen books including The Handbook of Psychopharmacology for Therapists, You Can Beat Depression and Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Preston is a highly gifted teacher, who has lectured widely in the United States and abroad. He consistently receives outstanding eval-uations from professionals attending his classes.
