Neurobiology of Anxiety and Depression: Treatment Implications
Course Description
This course explores in detail the neurobiology of anxiety and depression, and focuses on treatment implications. Topics covered include the role of severe stress in altering brain functioning, stress and immune compromise, and psychopharmacology. This course addresses theoretical issues, but also offers concrete, practical approaches to enhance outcome in therapy.
Objective
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: (1) understand the neurobiology of common psychiatric disorders; (2) learn how severe stress alters brain functioning; (3) understand how psychotherapy alters brain functioning (4) learn new techniques that can enhance outcome in psychotherapy; (5) identify non-medical ways to alter brain functioning through exercise, sleep enhancement, diet and light therapy.

John Preston, Psy.D., ABPP is a Professor of Psychology with Alliant International University. He has also been on the faculty of UC Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Preston is the author of fourteen books including The Handbook of Psychopharmacology for Therapists, You Can Beat Depression and Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Preston is a highly gifted teacher, who has lectured widely in the United States and abroad. He consistently receives outstanding eval-uations from professionals attending his classes.
