Course Description

This course is designed to improve practitioner’s abilities to assess, engage, and treat people with co-occurring mental health and substance use problems. Practical strategies and methods will be offered to help change interviewing methods, treatment planning and documentation, program components, range of services, and policies to better engage the dually diagnosed client.

Objective

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: (1) identify clinical dilemmas in the assessment and treatment of dually diagnosed individuals; (2) learn assessment strategies, techniques and priorities to determine how to deal with alcohol and other drug use in those with mental illness and vice versa; (3) identify strategies to engage the client and to develop a treatment plan that meets the client’s individual needs and stage of readiness to change; and (4) identify the program, staff and systems necessary to develop person-centered services instead of perpetuating fragmented care for dually diagnosed clients

David Mee-Lee, M.D.

David Mee-Lee, M.D. is a nationally recognized expert in dual diagnosis treatment and program development. He is a board certified psychiatrist with over 20 years of experience in this area and has added certification in addiction psychiatry. Dr. Mee-Lee is an outstanding teacher and educator, and maintains a full-time training and consulting practice, working with organizations, state and local mental health departments, and health care systems. He was the driving force behind the development of American Society of Addiction Medicine's (ASAM's) patient placement Criteria (PPC), which has become the national standard. In this course he discusses the new Co-Occurring Mental and Substance-Related Disorders criteria.
