Course Description
When trauma exposure involves early, repetitive, maltreatment, followed by later adverse experience, the outcome may involve not only classic post-traumatic stress, but also dysfunctional attachment styles, altered relational schema, affect dysregulation, and overdeveloped avoidance responses -- especially substance abuse, dissociation, and tension reduction behaviors. Dr. Briere will present a nonpathologizing, developmentally-informed approach to the treatment of complex post-traumatic presentations. This model incorporates cognitive-behavioral, relational, and mindfulness principles to support (a) the processing of traumatic memories through carefully titrated exposure, (b) changes in the client's relationship to trauma-related thoughts and feelings, (c) the development of increased affect regulation capacities, and (d) the reworking of activated relational schema and other implicit memories.
