Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive review of diagnostic criteria for PTSD, assessment issues and instruments, and treatment approaches. The course material helps clinicians understand issues involved in choosing a specific treatment approach, based on the specific needs of the patient. Neurobiological characteristics of those affected by PTSD are reviewed. Psychological treatment approaches are presented, along with the research findings to evaluate the effectiveness of these different approaches. The use of various classes of medications to treat PTSD is presented, as is their effectiveness in treatment.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: (1) describe the appropriate assessment techniques to diagnose PTSD; (2) describe the psychobiology of PTSD including the human stress response and brain alterations; and (3) list the most efficacious psychological treatment(s).
