Borderline Personality Disorder
Course Description
The course reviews the prevalence rate for BPD and the likelihood of recovery from BPD. Diagnostic criteria and issues are presented, as well as information on how to differentiate BPD from other psychiatric disorders. General and specific treatment strategies are examined, along with a review of treatment approaches ranging from psychoanalytic to cognitive to dialectical behavior therapy. Genetic, biological and neurological influences are reviewed, and pharmacological treatments are presented and compared.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: (1) describe appropriate assessment techniques to diagnose BPD; (2) list the most efficacious psychological treatment(s); and (3) state the effectiveness of behavior therapy vs. medication for treatment.
